History

Medica was founded by physicians in 1975 as Physicians Health Plan. It was the first open-access health plan in the state. In 1991, PHP merged with Share to become Medica. And in 1994, Medica merged with HealthSpan to form Allina Health System, an integrated organization offering both health care coverage and medical services. Medica became an independent health plan in 2001.

Membership

Medica provides health insurance products to 1.2 million members. Its coverage is available to individuals in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska and North Dakota, and to employers, third-party administrators and government programs in Minnesota and select counties in Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Provider Network

Medica’s broad regional networks include more than 96 percent of the providers and 100 percent of the hospitals in our service area. Medica also offers health plans with coverage that features access to a broad national network across the United States. Medica also offers high-value ACO networks with leading regional provider groups.

Community Involvement

Medica Foundation

Medica employees raised more than $500,000 to support local charities, social services and various health initiatives in the community in 2013. The Medica Foundation provides funding to community-based initiatives and programs that support the needs of our customers and the greater community by improving their health and removing barriers to health care services.

In 2013, the Medica Foundation provided $1.4 million in grants to community-based and statewide projects with emphases on Alzheimer’s Disease, behavioral health, early childhood health, generally health improvement and healthy lifestyles for people with disabilities.
